Eastway Early Years

Welcome to all the children who have returned to Early Years and to all our new children who will have all settled into our lovely class. We are very pleased to be working with you and your child as they begin this exciting and important stage of their learning journey.

The room is self contained and has its own entrance and out door area, as well as a pram store for the parents to be able to leave their prams on the premises.

The room mirrors Foundation 1 and 2 provision with areas such as: Sand, Water, Construction, Reading area, Writing area, Role play area and Small world area.

THE CURRICULUM

At Eastway we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (Birth to Five) and we aim to provide a broad and balanced, developmentally appropriate curriculum that caters for the wide range of needs of the children with whom we work.

The Three prime areas of learning and development are:

COMMUNICATION and LANGUAGE ... involves giving children opportunities to experience a language rich environment; to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves; and to speak and listen in a range of situations.

PHYSICAL .... involves providing opportunities for young children to be active and interactive; and to develop their coordination, control, and movement. Children must be helped to understand the importance of physical activity, and to make healthy choices in relation to food.

PERSONAL, SOCIAL & EMOTIONAL.... involves helping children to develop a positive sense of themselves, and others; to form relationships and develop respect for others; to develop social skills and learn how to manage their feelings; to understand appropriate behaviour in groups; and to have confidence in their own ability

The four further specific areas of learning are:

LITERACY development.... involves encouraging children to link sounds and letters and to begin to read and write. Children must be given access to a wide range of reading materials (books, poems, and other written materials) to ignite their interest

MATHEMATICS.... involves providing children with opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, calculating simple addition and subtraction problems and to describe shapes, spaces and measures.

EXPRESSIVE ARTS and DESIGN.... involves enabling children to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials, as well as providing opportunities and encouragement for sharing their thoughts, ideas and feelings through a variety of activities in art, music, movement, dance, role-play and design technology.

UNDERSTANDING THE WORLD.... involves guiding children to make sense of their physical world and their community through opportunities to explore, observe and find out about people, places, technology and the environment.

OUR DAILY ROUTINE
Each Early Year’s session consists of continuous provision. We differentiate our provision in response to the children’s needs and interests and we teach skills progression through our areas of provision. We have daily focussed stories and rhymes teaching in small groups. Our “funky fingers “ session each day has the children moving to music with activities designed to strengthen shoulder, arm, wrist and finger muscles and to develop strong upper body control in preparation for mark making and eventually writing.

What food and drink is provided for my child? Your child will have a snack in the morning and during the afternoon session where they are offered milk or water and a piece of fruit. Your child will have constant access to their own water bottle throughout the session.

KEY PERSON

Each child is assigned a ‘key person’, who will help your child to become settled, happy and feel safe. They, along with all staff are responsible for your child’s care, development and learning, and will take a careful note of your child’s progress which will be shared with you.  We still believe it is very important that all children form good relationships with all adults working within Early Years at Eastway School.

Who is my child's key worker? Your child will be allocated a key worker during their time at Eastway Early Years. Your child's key worker is clearly displayed within the classroom. If you unsure of your child's key worker, please speak to Miss Plant. Your child's key worker will spend more time with your child than any other adult and keep an extra eye on their health and well-being whilst at the setting.

We have introduced our “Chatter Book” home learning which goes home each Thursday. The “Chatter” book will be in the special book bag and the activities are designed to promote talking and listening at home.

CLOTHING

Sometimes accidents do happen in school so please could you provide a complete change of named clothes for your child in a small fabric draw string bag that can be kept in school on their peg. Please make sure that all your children’s uniform, including their coats have been labelled with your child’s name.
